The cross connect panel is provided with 50 horizontal rows of contacts each consisting of four y-shaped contact blades . each row contains contacts grouped into pairs 1-2 and 3-4 which are connected to each other mechanically and electrically , however , the contacts may be independent as well as connected.

The horizontal or main cables are installed under the mounting frames for 66 type cross connect panels , then cables go out to the front side through the special openings in the mounting frames . when the cable outer jacket is stripped , the pairs are laid out according to the color markings and then inserted in the corresponding slots in the sides of the panel . laid and fixed , the conductors are terminated in the contact blades using a specific termination tool.

The number of conductors must correspond to the number of contact blades.

The standard techniques of conductor layout one per slot , creates high level of crosstalk for special category 5 cross connection panels . to meet requirements of high-speed technologies , the pairs are installed in the slots twisted . this method enables the pairs to remain twisted as close to termination points as possible.
